Home Renovations in Ottawa - Larouche St: A Total Transformation

Home Renovations in Ottawa – Larouche St: A Total Transformation

All home renovations have a story to tell. We at RenosGroup believe that remodels are more than replacing new cabinets or renovating the floors. They are about transforming the way a room functions, feels, and appears. Our latest Home Renovations in Ottawa – Larouche St is a wonderful example of how a carefully thought-out transformation can transform a house into a contemporary, functional, and inviting dwelling. A Kitchen Designed for Living The kitchen was the focal point for this transformation. The home was restrained by outdated finishes and a compartmentalized floor plan, so we began by removing a wall to create a more open and connected floor plan. This created the big living rooms instantly brighter and provided the room an excellent setting for both everyday family life and entertaining guests. We installed brand-new cabinets that are modern-looking and stylish and provide you with maximum storage capacity. A classy tile backsplash and a solid quartz counter were integrated into the space. The tile provided texture and sophistication. The kitchen is not just functional anymore; it’s a masterpiece. Smooth ceilings provide a contemporary appearance. The ceilings were one area that made a huge impact. The original stipple texture was removed and covered with a smooth, skim-coated finish on the main floor, both bedrooms, and the hallway. This small change made a huge impact in the appearance of the house, making it look clean and up-to-date throughout. Finishing touches, flooring, and trim New hardwood flooring was installed on the ground floor, making the living areas cozy and engaging. We also installed soft carpet in the hallway and on the two sets of stairs to make the floors warm and inviting. The new baseboards joined the rooms together and made the entire house look finished and uniform. The bay window received new trim as well, which allowed for more natural light and updated the overall appearance. These small touches made the entire house feel like a cohesive unit. A Basement with a Purpose The basement was converted into a stylish and functional living area. We renovated the bathroom to make it cozier and included a bespoke wine showcase cabinet, which is an excellent feature that combines luxury and functionality. This feature makes the basement appear and feel distinct, adding more value to the house. It can be utilized for entertaining guests or simply unwinding at home. New Paint Throughout The entire house was coated in new, neutral colors to tie the inside of the house together. The new paint not only brightened up every room, but it also enhanced the new features and finishes. It provided a great backdrop for furniture and decorations, allowing the owners the liberty to personalize their room to their liking. Exterior enhancements: deck and fences You can’t complete a renovation without renovating the exterior. We installed a new deck in the back, which made it a sturdy and inviting place to eat and lounge outdoors. They also installed new fences, which provided privacy and improved the appearance of the house from the street. These enhancements ensured that the exterior of the house feels as fresh and inviting as the interior. Complementary comments online from client:  Joey from Ottawa What Makes This Project Stand Out The Ottawa–Larouche St. house remodeling project demonstrates how strong a total-home renovation can be. All the small things were considered, from altering the structure, such as removing walls, to incorporating design aspects, such as new trim on the windows. The final impact is a house that feels new, warm, and prepared for years of domestic life. Designing Dreams: Crafting Your Perfect Kitchen Renovation Plan

Is the kitchen stuck in the past? Do you want a space that represents your style and makes cooking enjoyable? This blog post, based on the insightful guide “Designing Dreams: Crafting Your Perfect Kitchen Renovation Plan,” will provide you with the tools you need to turn your kitchen ideas into a beautiful reality. Envisioning Your Ideal Kitchen: Needs, Cooking Habits, and Desired Look It’s time to get serious about your dream kitchen. Before we get too caught up with beautiful photographs and fancy finishes, let’s take a step back and genuinely understand your needs for this area. This planning stage is critical for building a kitchen that is not only attractive but also functional for your lifestyle and cooking habits. Assess Your Kitchen Needs: Cooking Frequency: Do you prepare complex meals every night, or do you primarily utilize the kitchen for short breakfasts and social occasions? Knowing how frequently you’ll use the room will affect its functionality. Do you cook with a family or on your own? Consider how many people will be using the kitchen at once and how much space they will require to move around comfortably. Determine your storage requirements. Do you need a large pantry to store big items, or would well-organized cabinets suffice? Define Your Cooking Style. Culinary Focus: Do you enjoy exploring with international cuisines or prefer comfort foods? Your cooking preferences can impact appliance selection and layout decisions. Preparation Style: Do you appreciate prepping items ahead of time or prefer quick, one-pot meals? This will influence the type of counter space and appliances that you prioritize. Delegation Level: Do you prefer preparing ingredients yourself or assign responsibilities to others? This can help establish how much devoted prep area you need. Embrace Your Ideal Kitchen Design: Consider the overall style you want for your kitchen. Do you want a sleek, modern style with cutting-edge materials, or do you prefer a cozy, timeless atmosphere? Ambiance: Set the desired mood. Do you envisage a bright environment with large windows or a cozy setting with warm lighting and rich colors? Design preferences: Think about your personal style. Do you want a kitchen that makes a dramatic statement or one that emphasizes clean lines and a clutter-free appearance? By analyzing your needs, cooking habits, and desired look, you’ll lay the groundwork for a dream kitchen that goes beyond aesthetics to become a space that truly expresses your personality and love of food. Budgeting for Success: Designing Your Dream Kitchen Within Your Means So you’ve imagined your ideal kitchen, a room that reflects your wants and cooking preferences. The next step is to create a realistic financial strategy to turn that desire into a reality. Kitchen renovations can be costly, so it is critical to have a clear budget from the start. Here’s how to navigate the financial waters and keep your dream kitchen from becoming a fiscal nightmare. Know Your Numbers: Before plunging in, assess your current financial situation. Examine your income, expenses, and current savings. Project scope: Determine the scale of your renovation. Are you considering a total redesign or a more targeted refresh? A realistic grasp of the project’s scope can assist you in developing an appropriate budget. Research is essential. Determine the average cost of kitchen remodeling in your area. This includes materials, labor, permits, and any unforeseen costs. Online resources, contractor consultations, and estimates from local suppliers can provide useful information. Create a reasonable budget. Allocate 5-15% of your home’s value for renovations, as a rough guideline. This is a starting point; changes may be required depending on your financial status and project scope. Prioritize and allocate: Divide your budget into areas such as cabinetry, appliances, countertops, flooring, and labor. Allocate a set budget to each category, focusing on the elements that are most important to your dream kitchen. Embrace Financial Planning: Establish a budget for renovations. This will set the timeline for your project and may influence financing alternatives. Consider home equity loans or credit cards as responsible financing options to bridge the financial gap.  Consider the Unexpected:  Set aside 15-20% of your budget for a contingency fund to prepare for unexpected events. Unexpected complications, such as concealed plumbing problems or electrical improvements, may develop during renovation. Following these procedures will result in a reasonable and well-defined budget that will allow you to design your dream kitchen without endangering your financial security. Remember that a successful remodeling is about more than just the end result; it also requires careful financial planning throughout the process. Optimizing Your Layout: Unlocking Your Kitchen’s Potential through Smart Design Now that you’ve imagined your ideal kitchen and set a budget, it’s time to turn those plans into a useful and beautiful area. Layout optimization is the art of maximizing your space to produce a kitchen that not only looks great but also promotes a smooth and efficient operation. Understand Design Principles: The Work Triangle idea recommends aligning the refrigerator, sink, and stove in a triangle shape. Aim for a comfortable distance between these crucial zones to reduce unnecessary steps during cooking. Consider the natural flow of movement in your kitchen. People should not have to continuously avoid each other. Make clear paths for simple mobility and prevent generating bottlenecks. Organize your kitchen into task zones for food storage, preparation, cooking, cleaning, and serving. This fosters logical workflow and increases efficiency. Optimizing for your space: Measure twice, cut once: Before planning your kitchen arrangement, take precise measurements. Include entrances, windows, and any existing fittings. Accurate dimensions are critical for designing a practical layout. Utilize software solutions, such as online kitchen design tools and mobile apps, to visualize layout possibilities for your area. Experiment with unorthodox configurations to better fit your space. Depending on your needs and tastes, you can choose galley kitchens, L-shaped layouts, or even open-concept designs that combine with living rooms. Maximising Functionality: Position appliances strategically for optimal workflow. For example, place the dishwasher near the sink for easy cleanup. Maximize storage using creative solutions such

Kitchen Design and Build

Kitchen Design and Build

Are you planning a kitchen design and build project? Congratulations! This is an exciting time as you plan and select the features for your new kitchen. Here are some tips to help make your project go smoothly. Start by creating a wish list of all the features you would like in your new kitchen. Then, prioritize those items on your list to help narrow down what is most important to you. Once you have a good idea of what you want, start researching different designers and builders who can help turn your vision into reality. When meeting with potential contractors, be sure to ask plenty of questions and get clarity on pricing and the timeline for completion. With careful planning and execution, your new kitchen will soon be the heart of your home! How to Design and Build Your Kitchen If your kitchen needs an upgrade, kitchen design can be a great way to get the look and functionality you’re after. The best kitchen designs focus on both form and function, creating a layout that suits your kitchen needs. It’s important to decide on the style or theme of your kitchen – do you want a contemporary kitchen, or perhaps something more traditional? Your appliances should be considered too, as should making sure there is enough room for food prep and dining. Creative lighting solutions will bring your kitchen design to life, illuminating dark corners and bringing texture and color into the otherwise hard surfaces of kitchen furniture. Combining all these elements to complete the perfect kitchen design can take some time and research – but it will be worth it in the end! Going on a kitchen makeover journey? A functional and visually appealing kitchen design is essential for a successful project. Striking the appropriate balance between aesthetics and usefulness guarantees that your kitchen not only looks appealing but also improves the cooking and food preparation experience. Factors to Consider for Kitchen Design: 1. Layout Matters The first step is to create a well-thought-out layout. Consider strategically placing vital components such as the sink, countertop, refrigerator, and eating space. A planned and streamlined style encourages usefulness and efficiency in kitchen design. 2. Storage Solutions. Ample storage is essential for decluttering your kitchen space. Consider overhead cabinets, extra drawers, and well-designed shelves to store cookware and food items. A clutter-free atmosphere promotes safety and provides an optimal space for food preparation. 3. Illuminating Ambiance. Don’t underestimate the value of adequate illumination in your kitchen. Lighting sets the tone and promotes safe food preparation. Consider several alternatives, such as ambient lighting for the entire space and pendant lights for added beauty. Choose lighting options that help to create a well-lit and inviting kitchen space. 4. Floor Essentials Selecting the appropriate flooring material is critical for both safety and aesthetics. Choose lighter materials to create an airy atmosphere and make spills and potential risks more visible. Prioritize safety when selecting kitchen flooring to provide a safe cooking environment. 5. Ventilation of Fresh Air Proper ventilation is vital for keeping the kitchen fresh and odor-free. To remove cooking smells, ensure proper air circulation. Invest in a good range hood with a powerful extractor to improve your kitchen’s airflow and keep it smelling fresh. Tips for Hiring a Contractor When looking for a contractor to redesign your kitchen, it is important to ensure that you hire the best person for the job. Begin by compiling reference materials that display styles you like. Ask around for friends and family that have had kitchen renovations as this can help narrow down candidates. Once you choose your candidate, make sure to check their references and ask questions about what kind of timeline, cost, and materials they will be using. Do not forget to design a contract for both sides to agree upon ahead of the job. Taking all of these steps will help ensure that you pick the best contractor for kitchen design. When it comes to renovating your kitchen, choosing the appropriate contractor is critical to getting the desired results. To achieve successful cooperation, the approach includes extensive research, reference gathering, and clear communication. In this tutorial, we’ll share some helpful hints for finding a contractor who can bring your kitchen redesign concept to life. Compile reference materials: Begin by gathering reference materials that reflect the styles you want for your kitchen. Make a vision board or folder with photos that represent your intended design elements, color schemes, and overall aesthetic. Seek recommendations: Ask friends and relatives who have renovated their kitchens for contractor referrals. Personal recommendations can provide useful information about a contractor’s workmanship, dependability, and professionalism. Research and select candidates: Conduct online research to find possible contractors in your area. Examine internet reviews, testimonials, and portfolios to determine their previous work and client satisfaction. Shortlist applicants based on their skills, experience, and suitability for your project. Check the references: Contact the contractor’s references to learn more about their job quality and reliability. Inquire about the reference’s general happiness, timeliness, communication, and any issues encountered during the project. Ask detailed questions. Arrange a meeting with the potential contractor to go over important topics. Inquire about the project timetable, expected expenses, and materials they want to employ. Clear up any confusion and ensure that communication is transparent. Review previous projects: View completed projects or request a portfolio of the contractor’s work. Examine their level of craftsmanship, attention to detail, and whether their prior projects are consistent with your vision. Ensure licensing and insurance. Confirm that the contractor has the licenses and certifications required in your area. Check their insurance coverage to avoid any unexpected obligations throughout the project. Establish a detailed contract. Collaborate with the contractor to create a complete contract outlining project specifics, dates, pricing, and materials. Before starting the project, make sure that both sides have agreed on the parameters. Communication is key. Emphasize the need for open and constant communication throughout the project. Establish a preferred means of contact and ensure that

Kitchens in 2023

Kitchens in 2023

The kitchen is the heart of the home. It’s a place where we gather to cook, eat, and connect with loved ones. In 2023, kitchens will be even more central to our lives. With technology becoming more integrated into our daily lives, kitchens will become “smart” spaces that help us manage our time and resources more effectively. Here are some of the ways that kitchens will change in the next five years: ____ The kitchen is the new living room – it’s where we entertain guests and spend most of our time The kitchen is no longer just an area we visit a few times throughout the day while preparing meals. It has truly become the new living room, with elegant counter styling and comfortable seating options. Now more than ever, kitchens are places where friends and family gather to spend quality time together; chatting, laughing, or even having an impromptu dinner party. With today’s kitchens packed with all of the modern creature comforts you would expect in any other room of your home, such as audio/visual systems, refrigerators for outdoor patio areas, custom dining tables and mobile furniture tailoring; kitchens have been designed to be inviting and enjoyable spaces for entertaining. Kitchens will be more open and airy, with fewer walls and more windows Kitchens are becoming an integral part of modern homes, going far beyond the pure functionality of the past. Many kitchens today are now a place for families to gather together and share meals, for friends to connect over a bottle of wine, and for people to make reminiscences in. As such, kitchens will increasingly be constructed with fewer walls and more windows, furthering the aim of making these spaces larger and more open in order to promote connection between users. Nowadays, kitchens must act as both aesthetically pleasing workspaces that are also inviting places to socialize; by using more windows kitchens can do both. More natural light entering kitchens will allow them to become airier places that foster connection while still looking great! Cabinets will be made of sustainable materials like bamboo or recycled plastic Kitchens are among the most important rooms in a home, so making sure that the materials used to create their cabinets are sustainable is of utmost importance. Fortunately, modern cabinetmakers understand this and now offer kitchens made from sustainable materials such as bamboo and recycled plastic. These products not only look great, but they also help reduce strain on our planet’s resources. Not only do they help achieve a more ecological-friendly lifestyle, but they also add an attractive flair to kitchens that many other cabinet materials cannot match. Sustainable cabinet materials are becoming increasingly popular for kitchens and other rooms throughout the home. Countertops will be made of recycled glass or stone When it comes to kitchens, one of the most important features is the countertop and now kitchens could be getting even greener. Recycled glass or stone countertops are becoming more popular, transforming ordinary kitchens into something more sustainable. With this new option, you can have your kitchen looking chic and fashionable while still helping the environment. This look not only feels good but looks great too with beautifully mixed colors and textures. No matter if you’re remodeling an old kitchen or starting fresh in a new space, recycled glass and stone countertops can add a modern touch to any home design. Appliances will be energy-efficient and connected to the internet Kitchens are becoming smarter every day with energy-efficient appliances that are connected to the internet of things. Not only can these devices save homeowners money and energy, but they also give them access to a world of convenience. Home chefs have access to hands-free preprogrammed recipes and ingredients, and can even ask their connected oven for useful cooking tips. Meanwhile, connected refrigerators help busy moms keep track of what ingredients they have on hand and when it’s time for a grocery run. Everyone can benefit from these energy-efficient appliances that help kitchens work more efficiently than ever before. The kitchen will be the heart of the home, so make sure it reflects your style! The kitchens in our homes are often seen as a refuge and a creative space. They can be the place where delicious meals come together, memories are made, and family is connected. No matter the size of the kitchen or individual styles, kitchens should be both functional and inviting. Find ways to express yourself in this important area of your home through decor, color or layout. If there’s something you don’t like about your kitchens design or style, incorporate changes that fit with your decor aesthetic. Make it a place that you’ll look forward to spending time in and creating delicious meals for your friends and family! In the near future, the kitchen will be the new living room. With an open concept and fewer walls, it will be more inviting and homey. The cabinets will be made of sustainable materials like bamboo or recycled plastic, and the countertops will be made of recycled glass or stone. The appliances will be energy-efficient and connected to the internet. So why wait? contact us or call us at 613-727-9427  today for more information about kitchens! How to Choose a Kitchen Renovator in Ottawa

If you’re considering a kitchen renovator in Ottawa, you might feel a little overwhelmed. There are so many things to consider! What style do you want? What materials should you use? And, most importantly, who should you hire to do the work? In this blog post, we’ll focus on the last question. How can you choose a kitchen renovator in Ottawa who will do a great job? Keep reading to find out! 1. Get Recommendations from Family and Friends When it comes to finding a reputable contractor, word-of-mouth recommendations are always best. Talk to your friends and family members who have recently renovated their kitchens and see if they have any recommendations. Once you’ve compiled a list of potential candidates, you can start doing your own research. 2. Look for Online Reviews These days, it’s easy to find reviews for just about anything online. A quick Google search will reveal what other customers have said about a particular company. Reading reviews can give you a good sense of what it’s like to work with a particular contractor. But don’t just take everything at face value—look for patterns in the reviews. If most of them are positive but there are a few negatives ones mixed in, that’s probably not cause for alarm. But if all the reviews are negative, you might want to steer clear. 3. Check for Proper Licensing and Insurance Any reputable contractor should be properly licensed and insured. Ask to see proof of both before you sign any contracts. This will protect you in case anything goes wrong during the renovation process. 4. Make Sure They’re Experienced When it comes to something as important as your kitchen, you want to make sure it’s in good hands. Ask potential contractors how long they’ve been in business and how many kitchens they’ve renovated. Then, ask to see some photos of previous projects. This will give you a good sense of their workmanship and style. 5. Get Everything in Writing Before any work begins, make sure you have a detailed contract that outlines the scope of work, materials to be used, timelines, and payment arrangements. This will protect both you and the contractor in case there are any misunderstandings down the road. Renovating your kitchen is a big undertaking—but it doesn’t have to be stressful! By taking the time to choose a reputable contractor, you can rest assured knowing that your kitchen is in good hands. Follow the tips outlined above and you’re sure to find a kitchen renovator in Ottawa who meets all your needs!  Don’t wait to reach out for a free in-home consultation or give us a call at (613) 727-9427.

Beyond the visual appeal, kitchens with convenient layouts will catch the eye of buyers, especially if they enjoy preparing their own meals.  Add-ons like islands, cabinets, and open shelves provide more options for storage space, which is great for buyers with lots of cooking utensils and appliances. The positioning also matters here, as you’ll want to ensure you have everything you need to cook a meal right in front of you.  If you have to make six 180s just to put together a grilled cheese sandwich, opting for a more practical layout will generate more interest from home buyers – not to mention it will make your life easier before you sell. It is possible to go a bit overboard with upgrading your kitchen, which may end up having the opposite effect than you intended. If you go with a mega-sized refrigerator and top-tier garbage disposal, the cost may rise higher than most buyers are willing to pay (of course, this is entirely up to you, as if you do find a buyer, you’ll end up selling your home for more). Your best bet to get the most bang for your buck is to renovate your kitchen with high-end appliances, cheery lighting, and an optimized design to make preparing meals a breeze. 2. Bathroom Remodel   Like the kitchen, bathrooms are another important selling point for potential buyers. A bathroom remodel can be relatively simple and inexpensive, but it will make a big impact on buyers. If your bathroom is outdated or in need of repairs, consider renovating it before putting your home on the market. Above all else, bathrooms should feel clean and pleasant.  Sometimes, a refresh is all a bathroom needs.  What’s that? A bathroom refresh is where you make several essential touch-ups to reinvigorate your bathroom. This includes things like a fresh coat of paint, a new vanity or mirror, and replacing busted towel racks. Other times, a more extensive renovation is necessary to make your bathrooms attractive to the market. The lighting in your bathroom can make a huge difference to some buyers, especially those that enjoy unwinding by soaking in a dimly lit tub. Adding a light dimmer is always a good idea, as is experimenting with different lighting combinations. If your bathrooms are tinier than a broom closet, adding more space with an addition or by moving around your sink and tub will help boost their appeal. While a tiny bathroom in connecting areas is fine, it’s better to have larger bathrooms in major areas, especially the master bedroom. Home buyers won’t like to see older-style toilets, so you should update them if they’re ancient. That’s because older toilets waste much more water, leading to a larger bill. Modern toilets are more efficient and save water, so it’s always wise to retrofit your bathrooms.  3. Finished basement     A finished basement is a great way to add extra living space to your home without having to build an addition. If your basement is currently unfinished, consider finishing it with drywall, flooring, and lighting fixtures. You could also add a bathroom or wet bar to make it even more appealing to buyers. An unfinished basement is wasted potential, as it’s part of your home’s square footage that you aren’t using. After all, you have to pay 100% of your mortgage, so why not use 100% of the space you have available? The best part is you can essentially add a brand-new room to your home without having to construct an addition. Would-be homeowners want to see your basement put to good use, and you have so many options. You could transform your basement into a kid’s playroom, a guest suite, a movie theater, or even a second living room. New homeowners love guest rooms, and having one will instantly make your home more valuable. There’s another benefit to transforming your basement into an extra bedroom besides increasing your property value – as it can generate passive income for you. By renting out your basement bedroom on platforms like Airbnb, your spare bedroom can make money for you before it’s time to pack up and sell your house. That’s not to mention that basements also make excellent wine cellars, man caves, and libraries. Not only will finishing your basement make your property value skyrocket, but it will also provide you with a great new space to enjoy in the time before you sell. If your basement is really exciting and attention-grabbing, you may start an all-out bidding war – which is 100x better than home buyers deciding without taking a second thought to skip on your property due to an unfinished basement.  4. Deck or Patio     More home improvements…If your home doesn’t have an outdoor living space, now is the time to create one. Adding a deck or patio is a great way to add extra square footage to your home and make it more enjoyable for entertaining guests. And since many buyers place a premium on homes with outdoor living spaces, you’re likely to see a return on your investment when you sell. There are many ways to create an exciting outdoor space with your new patio or deck – and they don’t all involve going

Undermount sink with laminate countertop

Undermount Sink with a Laminate Countertop ?

Undermount sinks have become all the rage in today’s age, as they provide a sleek appearance and are easier to keep clean (no ridge means no opportunity for grease and grime to accumulate). Yet, an undermount sink requires a different type of installation than traditional ‘drop-in’ sinks.  Also, undermount sinks work better with certain materials than others. In particular, solid surface materials work best, as they can support the considerable weight of the sink and your not left with exposed edges of unfinished wood around the sink opening. Due to their strength and durability, granite, soapstone, and concrete are all perfect countertop material options for undermount sinks. But what if you have laminate countertops instead? Will you still be able to install a beautiful undermount sink for your kitchen? The answer is a bit complicated. While possible, it’s a complex job that you should leave to a finish carpenter experienced in building laminate countertops. If you attempt to install an undermount sink into your laminate countertops by yourself, you could end up costing yourself thousands in repairs. Read on to learn more about undermount sinks and laminate countertops and how to combine the two successfully. What are Undermount Sinks? In general, there are two types of sinks used in kitchens and bathrooms – drop-in sinks and undermount sinks. The primary difference lies in the installation method. Drop-in sinks get installed by cutting a hole on top of the counter and dropping the sink in, hence the name. Undermount sinks, on the other hand, get installed beneath the countertop and are held in place by an extra-strong adhesive and special mounting brackets. For this reason, it’s critical for the material to be robust enough to support the weight of the sink without causing issues. For an undermount, the sink installs flush into the countertop, not below or above. While this provides a stylish look that’s also easier to clean – it’s what can cause problems with weaker materials, such as laminate countertops. Strength and stability aren’t the only issues laminate countertops have with undermount sinks, either. Laminate countertops contain MDF (medium-density fibreboard) underneath, which is extremely sensitive to moisture. If the MDF gets wet, it will ruin your countertops due to warping (foiling your ability to install an undermount sink in the future, too). So if you’re going to install an undermount sink on a laminate countertop in your kitchen or bathroom, you need to make doubly sure that no moisture can seep through into the MDF. Why are Undermount Sinks Popular? In the past, down-in sinks were virtually everywhere due to their versatility and ease of installation. However, undermount sinks have taken over in recent years due to a variety of attractive benefits they yield to homeowners, including: A superior sense of style. Undermount sinks provide a sleek, streamlined look that’s more modernized than a down-in sink. Many homeowners desire undermount sinks for the visual appeal alone. They’re more hygienic. Drop-in sinks have the unique disadvantage of having silicone bead seals around the edges. Not only are these unsightly, but they’re breeding grounds for bacteria, as they’re notorious for accumulating grease, grime, and dirt. An undermount sink has no such seal, so they’re a far more hygienic option. Clean-up is a breeze. This plays off the previous benefit. Since there’s no seal around the edge, there’s nothing for water/food remaining to get caught on. As such, you can clean your countertops by funneling everything directly into your sink. They add counter space. A drop-in sink will take up more counter space, limiting the area where you can prepare food and store appliances. Undermount sinks are far more compact, so you’ll enjoy more counter space as a result. You can install the faucet anywhere. On a drop-in sink, the faucet can only go in one spot – in the sink basin. With an undermount sink, you’ll experience full faucet freedom. You can choose to install it on the wall, behind the bowl, to the side, or wherever else you please. Those are the main reasons why undermount sinks have dramatically risen in popularity in recent years. Laminate Countertop Concerns As previously stated, laminate is a weaker material than granite or marble – which is why it has trouble supporting an undermount sink. So does that mean there’s no hope for laminate countertop owners with their hearts set on undermount sinks? Not at all, just that there are a few extra steps involved in the process (which will likely require homeowners to rethink their budget). We can’t stress enough that a complicated job like this is best left to professional contractors like us. Attempting to build your own laminate countertops or install a sink with mounting brackets and glue can end in disaster. For instance, if you get the particle board wet, it can warp your countertops and ruin them forever. Concluding Thoughts: Undermount Sink With Laminate Countertops In summary, installing an undermount sink on laminate countertops is possible. While laminate is far from the ideal material to use, it’s still doable with custom laminate countertops and a thin, utterly flat sink. We’ll be completely transparent…. In many cases, it will be more work and cost than it may be worth for you. If properly installing an undermount sink on your laminate countertops is out of your budget, we can recommend looking for good deals on leftover stone countertop pieces and using a standard unmount sink of your choice. Kitchen Remodeling in Ottawa - Lorraine Ave

Kitchen Remodeling in Ottawa: Cabinetry Guide

Whenever we consult with a client about kitchen remodeling in Ottawa, cabinetry is almost always the first subject that pops up, and it’s easy to see why. Your cabinets are often the central focal point of your kitchen, as they’re what catches the eye first. That means the cabinetry you choose will make or break your kitchen depending on their quality, color, finish, and style. The same is true for bathrooms, as well as basements that have guest rooms and kitchenettes. Yet, there’s quite a bit to know when selecting cabinetry for your home. Hundreds of designs, styles, materials, and finishes exist. You’ll also need to consider your budget and the overall feel you want your kitchen, basement, or bathroom to have. Considering this, we’ve compiled this extensive purchasing guide for kitchen cabinets. That way, you’ll know exactly what to ask for when consulting with a kitchen contractor in Ottawa – including a realistic price range, so you don’t exceed your budget. Stick around to learn everything you need to know about buying cabinets for your basement, bathroom, or kitchen remodeling in Ottawa. The Different Types of Cabinets First, it’s essential to familiarize yourself with the different types of cabinetry to determine your needs. Regarding kitchens, the design typically consists of base cabinets, wall cabinets, and pantry cabinets. The most popular bathroom options are Vanities, shaker-style, and louvered cabinets. Basements tend to feature wall cabinets and ample storage cabinets – but they can also feature base cabinets and pantries if they have a kitchenette. To discover what will work best for your renovation project, let’s take a more detailed look at each cabinet type. Base Cabinets Base cabinets serve two purposes; to provide storage space and to serve as a foundation for your kitchen’s countertop or sink. For countertops featuring materials like granite or marble, base cabinetry needs extra reinforcement to provide proper support. Kitchen sinks are also heavy and require a strong foundation, which is where base cabinets come into play. They hold up your sinks and countertops so you can work at standing height and provide convenient storage space for appliances, cleaning supplies, and more. In particular, there are two types of base cabinets: Sink base cabinets. These cabinets are specifically designed to support a kitchen sink – which is why they have an open back and a false drawer in front (it’s to work around your plumbing without drawing attention to it). They also provide storage space, and they come in a wide variety of colors and styles. Corner cabinets. These are the cabinets that occupy the corners of your counter space. Several types of corner cabinets help you get the most out of your kitchen. Blind cabinets feature half a standard cabinet, with the other half being the corner of the adjacent cabinet. Lazy susan cabinets have rotating bases so you can easily access items in the back. On average, base cabinets are around 24-inches deep with a few different options for width. Without a countertop, they average 34 inches in height. With a countertop, it jumps up to 35 to 36 inches. Wall Cabinets As the name implies, wall cabinets mount to the walls in your kitchen. Since they’re up high, these cabinets matter the most for visual appeal. They’re the focal point of the entire room, so it’s imperative to select the right style and material for them. They come in various heights and widths, as some wall cabinets are shorter and hover over appliances like microwaves and refrigerators. Others are taller and typically reach up to 40″ inches in height. Most wall cabinets feature adjustable shelves, with the height determining the number of shelves you can have. Depending on the width of the cabinets, they can be a single door, double door, or even triple door if there’s enough room. Like base cabinets, there are also corner wall cabinets – the most popular type being angled corner cabinets. They’re typically 12-inches deep and 12 to 42-inches wide. There are many ways that we can add visual flair to your wall cabinets through our Ottawa kitchen remodeling, such as: LED lighting arrangements Artistic glass inserts Decorative framing and door designs It’s also possible to raise or lower wall cabinets for accessibility reasons. Pantry Cabinets for Ottawa Kitchen Remodeling Pantries start at the floor and are usually quite tall. Typical heights range from 84-inches to 96-inches, with widths ranging from 12 to 36-inches. Besides serving as a pantry, these tall cabinets also work as a way to house wall ovens and refrigeration units. Yet, the most common use is as a pantry, and they usually have two doors and up to three adjustable shelves. A pantry is necessary for any Ottawa kitchen remodel, as you want plenty of room to store all your non-perishable (and perishable) food items. Without one, you likely won’t have enough storage space for all your food, which leads to unsightly clutter (such as cereal boxes stacked on top of the fridge). It’s common for pantries to have top and bottom sections. The top has three adjustable shelves, and the bottom is either open or has more storage options like pull out shelves. Shaker-Style Cabinets In our experience with Ottawa kitchen remodeling, shaker-style cabinets are among the most popular for both kitchens and bathrooms. They provide a timeless appeal that never goes out of style and work great for achieving the farmhouse kitchen look. A shaker-style cabinet features five components: Two stiles Two rails A recessed panel in the middle Shakers mix well with glass inserts, and it’s easy to spruce them up with millwork to add some visual flair. Glass-Front Cabinets Do you want to add ritz and sophistication to your kitchen cabinetry? If so, there’s no better way than by adding glass-front cabinets. They’re popular for wall cabinets, base cabinets, and cabinets under kitchen islands. While you probably don’t want to use glass-front cabinets for every cabinet, it looks stylish to mix and match. In particular, glass-front cabinets

Know What You Need First and foremost, you need to know precisely what you want. Do you want to renovate your kitchen, basement, or bathrooms? Are you focused on renovating for practicality or visual appeal? Do you have a realistic budget in mind? These are all essential questions that you must ask yourself before getting started. If you aren’t sure of what you want, you might end up with something you don’t need. As such, it’s imperative that you sit down and decide everything that you want out of your renovations. Here are a few tips to follow: Decide on which rooms you need to renovate Walk by each room and decide on the changes you want to make (new furniture, cabinets, appliances, etc.) Evaluate your finances and come up with a realistic budget Consider the scope of work and how long it might take to complete Once you have all these steps complete, then you’re ready to start your search. Shop Around for Bids The next step is to do some quote research. Try to get as many quotes from as many contractors as you possibly can. That way, you know for a fact that you’re getting the best deal. Yet, it would be best if you did not make a choice based entirely on price. That’s because cheaper contractors often do shoddy and unreliable work. Bearing that in mind, you’ll need to find contractors that are within your budget
